A deepener is used to intensify trance depth. Immediately after trance induction, one should apply at least two deepeners on a subject. A delay in application of deepener may bring a subject in waking and conscious state. Be soft and gentle through the use of deepeners. While doing trance work, deepeners are given time to time to maintain trance depth. Whenever, you notice that a subject is progressing to a lighter state of hypnosis, give one or the other deepener. A simple repetition of ‘you are going deeper and deeper…still more deep’ serves the purpose most of the time. Use your creativity and imagination to develop more and more deepeners. The number of deepeners is limited only by your own imagination. There could be hundreds of ways to deepen a trance. Just have an open mind and an experimental attitude to devise more deepeners in your practice.
I am describing several trance deepeners which would help you to deepen hypnotic trance. I would recommend you to learn from these deepeners and adapt to your own style and develop your own instructions accordingly.

- Deepening instructions should be repeated periodically during trance work to maintain the trance depth as subjects tend to oscillate between light to deep trance in a session. The simple repeating, go deeper and deeper … still more deep should be suffice.
- The term sleep in the deepeners can be replaced by relaxation or lightness if required.
Now visualize a sky with white clouds … clouds are moving in the sky …. focus on a piece of cloud … the cloud is moving ahead … as the piece of cloud is moving … you are going deeper and deeper into sleep …. with every movement of this piece of cloud … you are drifting more and more deep into sleep…. deeper and deeper …. still more deep ….as the piece of cloud is fading away from the visual field … you are sinking into the deepest level of sleep…..
PARK VISUALIZATION METHOD
Now visualize a beautiful park …. visualize and feel that you are sleeping on the grass in the park … visualize variety of trees …. variety of flowers … red … yellow … pink…. white … now focus on red flowers … as you are focusing on red flowers …. you are going deeper and deeper into relaxation ….. now focus on yellow flowers…. as you are focusing on yellow flowers … you are going still more deeper into relaxation …. focus on white flowers …. as you focus …. you are drifting to the deepest level of relaxation and calmness …..
Now imagine as if you are standing on the top of a staircase…. there are ten steps beneath it … I would be counting 10-1, with every count you would step down; and sink deeper and deeper into relaxation …. ten … still more deeper …. nine ….deeper and deeper ….. eight … still more deeper …. seven …. six…. five … deeper and deeper…. four … still more deeper …. three … deeper and deeper …. two… deeper and deeper ….. one …still more deeper ……
Now imagine that you are in a lift which is on the 10th floor … when I count 9-1, you would press the spoken number in the lift; as the lift comes down to the lower floor you would sink deeper and deeper into relaxation …. nine ….deeper and deeper ….. eight … still more deeper …. seven …. six…. five … deeper and deeper…. four … still more deeper …. three … deeper and deeper …. two… deeper and deeper ….. one …still more deep ……
Now imagine that it is a night time … look at the sky … innumerable stars blinking in the sky … full moon shining in the sky … with passage of time you are passing deeper and deeper into sleep … (60 seconds pause).
Now I would count five to one … whatever I say let it happen naturally and spontaneously … five … with every breath you going deeper and deeper into sleep … four … your depth of sleep is increasing ten times … three … you shall continue to hear my voice throughout … you will come back in a better than before condition when I ask to do so … two … one … with passage of time you shall continue to go deeper and deeper into sleep.
Now go deeper and deeper into sleep …. with passage of time you are going still more deep …. when you feel a medium or deeper level of relaxation you could either raise your left hand index finger or node (pause till confirmation)
Now I am going to count 1-36 …. with every count you will go deeper and deeper into sleep … (count upto 24 slowly @ one count per second …… suddenly and without any warning … begin counting backward … from 24 to 12 … and again without any warning …. begin counting upward from 12 to 36 …….)
Now visualize … as if you are in a park ….. imagine and visualize beautiful flowers in the park …… you are standing near a flower tree …. you are counting the beautiful flowers on the tree …. as you are counting you are going deeper and deeper into relaxation … there are ten flowers on the tree … you are going to remove the flowers one by one …. with every removal you are passing into deeper and deeper level of sleep …. when you remove the last flower … you would be in deepest level of sleep …. just confirm the removal of tenth flower by raising left hand index finger or nodding … (wait for confirmation).
Visualize a highly spiritual place ….. you are sitting there …. may be praying …. enchanting a mantra …. or just deeply relaxed … calm and quiet….. looking at the sky or the surroundings ….. while you are deeply relaxed….. a white light full of divine powers is coming towards you somewhere from the universe … may be vast sky…. the white light full of divine powers is enveloping your entire body …. and penetrating in each cell of your body …. making you go deeper and deeper into relaxation…..when you feel deeply relaxed …let your left hand finger be raised…..(wait for confirmation)
Association with Breathing:
With each inhalation you are going deeper and deeper into relaxation …. every breath you take… brings more and more deep relaxation …..just feel the relaxation building in your body and mind with every breath…. when you find yourself in medium or more depth let left hand index finger be raised (wait for confirmation)
Tapping Between Eyebrows:
Now I am going to tap between your eyebrows … with every tap you would find yourself sinking deeper and deeper into relaxation …. (Give about five taps gently with a few seconds pause between taps),,,, with every tap, you are going more and more deep into relaxation …. allow yourself to drift deeper and deeper into relaxation with every tap…. when you feel yourself deeply relaxed let the index finger of your left hand be raised (wait for confirmation)
Quick Body Scan:
I am going to name your body parts… with mind’s eye you will view the named body part … with every view you would be going deeper and deeper into sleep ….let your mind view your both the legs …. go deeper and deeper …. both the arms …. still more deep … abdomen …. back …still more deep…. face….. head….deeper and deeper… when you feel yourself in a deep sleep let your left hand finger be raised (wait for confirmation)
Use of Contextual Cues: The situational factors like noise, smile, body movement of the subjects are present during trance state; then these cues can be used to one’s advantage by suggesting to the subjects that as long as these factors are present; he would drift deeper and deeper into trance.
A Word of Caution:If a subject during trance state is smiling do not conclude that he is not in trance and he is faking. This can be quite misleading and detrimental to the subject. Continue your suggestions in professional manner and use it as a deepener or ignore the smiling. Other body movements like swallowing movements, eye lid fluttering can also be misleading to a novice. You must remember that these are indications of trance not the deliberate faking and you must continue to do your trance work. A subject’s report that he was hypnotized or not hypnotized is not an indication of hypnotic trance. There are definite indications of trance which you would learn shortly under trance testing chapter.
